Canadian Critters Suite - Digital PDF

As a Canadian flutist & educator, I am always looking for more Canadian content for my students.  When Christine Donkin from Victoria, BC contacted me about commissioning her young composition club to write some new music for my flute students, I jumped at the opportunity.  Music for kids, written by kids? Yes, please!

Together, Christine and I laid out the format: Each piece is based on the G major five-note patters so even the very young beginner flutists can play these duets.  The second part is written for their teacher or an older student.  I envisioned the pieces would be based on Canadian animals and provided a list for the young composers to choose from.  They were so excited by the concept that they decided to write music for all of the animals—and the Canadian Critters Suite was born!

When looking to turn these sweet duets into a book for young flutists, I wanted to create something students could have fun with (hello, colouring pages!).  I was quickly drawn to working with Emily from Artio Design Co, also based in Victoria, BC!  She shared the vision for this suite and created adorable illustrations that give each animal its own distinct character and voice.

This PDF digital download includes 9 duets for 2 flutes or 2 treble instruments.  Each duet is paired with a sweet illustration for students to colour. The animals include:

Mike the Moose

Patricia the Polar Bear

Beatrice the Beaver

Alex the Atlantic Puffin

Simon the Snowy Owl

Cohen the Caribou

Benji the Blue Jay

Carla the Canada Goose

Sam and Sara the Sea Otters

I hope you enjoy the Canadian Critters Suite just as much as we enjoyed creating it for you!
